 I was taught to paint in a traditional way and I’ve used a traditional color palette for the last couple of years, and enjoyed it. But earlier this year, an art teacher advised us to forget the rules and just use whatever colors make us happy… what a concept! Even if it’s (gasp) fluorescent pink.

 It was the permission slip I didn’t realize I needed. I started painting with colors I’d never even touched before. My inner “rule follower” was very displeased, but my true self was singing with joy. Sometimes you just need someone to tell you to forget the rules and do what makes you happy.
